This is a hybrid build consisting of a figured live edge slab of curly Maple married to an upcycled storage box. From first contact, it appears to be a coffee table or bench, yet the top is hinged and can be raised up to allow storage of records, blankets, toys, etc. Simply lift up on the slab and viola…extra space! This modern piece would be extremely handy for a quick pick up (toss your mess/ kids toys inside) or used for storage in a space where every inch counts. To top it off…it looks cool! The base is an upcycled hinged cabinet that has a Mid Century and Art Deco feel with the clean lines & vertical wooden trim on the facade. It has been cleaned, treated with wood filler (where needed), sanded smooth, tightened up, painted flat black and sealed with poly. There's nothing better than reviving cool old pieces such as the base, especially when you add a killer live edge slab to the top. It is now a bit of old, a bit of new and a bunch of different! Measures 45" L x 16" to 17" Deep x 16 1/2"H. Whoever gets this is going to love its clean look and versatility! * Please do n pot purchase this listing until you receive an exact shipping quote. Kentucky LiveEdge is operated by craftsman Drew Gahafer. He creates quality live edge furniture and unique applications for home and office.
Drew Gahafer is a self-taught woodworker, artist and furniture designer that got his start by upcycling furniture that was either thrown away, neglected, or purchased for mere pennies at yard sales or consignment shops. Plastics, glass, metals and wood were all materials that he was intrigued on refurbishing and building with. In 2008 he built his family home, which was a narrow shotgun style house. After weeks of housing the traditional square coffee table, he realized the dimensions took up 1/3 of the rooms space. In an effort to create something customized for his home space, he traveled back to his roots and brought back 2 narrow live edge slabs from a sawmill in Eastern Kentucky. By the time his first two pieces were near completion, his family and friends made offers on both pieces. He obliged and returned to the mountains for 5 live edge slabs of wood. Once those 5 were near completion, same story. To this day, his home lacks a coffee table.
