This is LARGE live edge coffee table! It is composed of two book-matched walnut slabs that were jointed at each end. The slabs came from a massive walnut tree that was part of an urban reclaim job over 5 years ago in Lexington, Kentucky. The tree was considered old growth with extremely tight growth rings and hardly any sapwood on the surface. These possess a great deal of figuring throughout the center of each slab. Being that they were sequence cuts, the figuring and grains align almost perfectly and the table top appears to be one large slab. Together, the table top has an oval or surfboard shape with widest point in the middle and tapered ends. The top has been planed flat, sanded smooth and finished in a blend of oil and satin poly. The finish provides a natural luster and protective layer ready to combat moisture and scratches. The top was married to four mid century modern steel hairpin legs. The legs have been clear coated for durability and to eliminate rust. The mix of natural wood with live edges and the steel hairpin legs gives a nice juxtaposition between rustic, mid century, industrial and contemporary design. It's a big and beautiful coffee table, strong enough to also serve as a bench. This piece is completely finished and ready to ship! Measures: 50" L x 20" avg W x 18.25" H and the top is a solid 2.5" thick.

Kentucky LiveEdge is operated by craftsman Drew Gahafer. He creates quality live edge furniture and unique applications for home and office.
Drew Gahafer is a self-taught woodworker, artist and furniture designer that got his start by upcycling furniture that was either thrown away, neglected, or purchased for mere pennies at yard sales or consignment shops. Plastics, glass, metals and wood were all materials that he was intrigued on refurbishing and building with. In 2008 he built his family home, which was a narrow shotgun style house. After weeks of housing the traditional square coffee table, he realized the dimensions took up 1/3 of the rooms space. In an effort to create something customized for his home space, he traveled back to his roots and brought back 2 narrow live edge slabs from a sawmill in Eastern Kentucky. By the time his first two pieces were near completion, his family and friends made offers on both pieces. He obliged and returned to the mountains for 5 live edge slabs of wood. Once those 5 were near completion, same story. To this day, his home lacks a coffee table.
