This mantel beam came from an old log settlers cabin in SW Wisconsin dating back to the late 1800s. It was the rafter plate and had a couple of notches where the rafters fit into place. We thought that a bit of blacksmith work was the best way to work around this old character. The top and bottom of this mantel show original ax marks from settlers in the 1800s. Imagine that! This is a piece of history from when transportation was only horse and wagon. The blacksmith work was done at WLB Blacksmith Shop in LeSueur, Minnesota. Wyatt always does nice, hand-hammered original work. This mantel was one that we have him carte blanche. Lot of nice features on this one -- handmade rivets, a square washer, and a split band on the bottom. 6in tall x 9in deep x 70.5 in long. We can cut the mantel down in length for no additional cost. This particular example mantel prices out at $690 for the wood portion and $550 for the metalwork. Our mantels run $115/LF for the hand-hewn mantel and $100/LF for a circle sawn mantel. Ironwork ranges from $225 for simple metal straps to something like this in the $550 range. By not splitting that strap near the bottom back, the metal work cost goes down to $330 for the pair of straps. Most average size mantels will ship for $75 via FedEx Gnd. Some larger mantels need to go Truck Freight or get charged extra by FedEx.
Antique Woodworks
We are a small mom-and-pop shop that works hands-on to craft tables, mantels, and countertops. We feel so very fortunate to reclaim old wood from the fading American landscape and to create wonderful pieces that can last generations. It is indeed a blessing. We work together with exceptionally talented blacksmiths who add true, hand-hammered ironwork to some already fantastic, well-crafted reclaimed wood pieces.
Farm Tables
Our artistry comes alive when we create farm tables, harvest tables, trestle tables, and even industrial base tables. This old reclaimed wood lends itself wonderfully to truly touchable beauty. With our tables, you just can’t help but touch 'em and run your hand across 'em.
Wood Countertops
As a returning trend, wood countertops are great. With flowing edges, unique colors, and interesting textures, our reclaimed wood countertops are even better than modern solid wood countertops.
Fireplace Mantels
These beam mantels are the real thing – many with ax marks from American settlers in the 1800s. There’s no “distressing” in our shop; it’s all original. We sand and finish to make each beam a thing of beauty. Our blacksmith partners can add a wonderful variety of accents to each piece.
Antique Woodworks, specifically Kevin Coffel, was amazing to work with. Despite only communicating through email and pictures, he was able to deliver exactly what we were looking for in our mantle. With this piece being such a crucial statement piece in our new home, I can’t begin to put into words how nice it was to have Kevin concern himself with giving us exactly what we wanted. It is truly a beautiful work of art and we can’t wait to have it installed.
This mantel is exactly what we were looking for: rustic, sturdy, well-made, and with a character all its own. The communication was excellent. The craftsman worked closely with us to determine measurements, color, and details. He provided pictures throughout the process of its construction progress (a great addition to our house construction album!). When it arrived and we saw it firsthand, it far exceeded our expectations. It's going to be the perfect complement to the fireplace in our game room.
We reviewed mantels on more than 20 websites before purchasing one from Antique Woodworks. The mantels there were extremely well photographed, precisely measured, perfectly described, and sold as advertised. They even included a short history on where they originated. We're very happy with what we purchased.
Working with Kevin at Antique Woodwork was one of the most pleasant experiences. He was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful with me in picking the right mantel. For our fireplace renovation, we replaced the insert, tile, hearth and mantel. The mantel is showpiece of the whole thing. It's just breathtaking. Thanks Kevin!
Kevin did a fantastic job on my custom made mantels. This was my first time using Custom Made and I was very leery about using it since I could not actually touch the product. When Kevin sent pictures, I immediately loved his work but when I opened the shipping packages and I fell in love with the masterpieces in front of me! What a unbelievable work of art!! He is truly the best at his work!! If you choose anyone but Kevin, you will be getting a second place art piece and wasting your money!! Thanks Kevin. Job well done!!
