About Knife Sheaths
Sheaths here are made to fit a specific knife, from fixed blades to well-known hunting and utility models. Leather sheaths come hand-tooled, hand-dyed or hand-painted, in pocket and slip styles, for vertical or horizontal belt carry, or with leg straps. Some combine a Kydex liner with a leather shell and a sheepskin lining for extra protection. Makers also build sheaths for machetes and axe heads, and frog sheaths that mount to a horse saddle.
What sets the price
A listing's price is usually a starting point. Half of the listings here are priced between about $80 and $165, with a median near $110, and one in ten is priced above $330. Size, material, tooling or painted work, and extras such as a liner, snaps or a leg strap set the price of a commission.
Before you start
- The knife: its make and model if it has one, or detailed photos with the blade and handle measured.
- How you'll wear it: on a belt, vertical or horizontal, in a pocket, on a leg strap, or on a saddle.
- Your belt width, and which side you wear it on.
- Leather color, tooling, initials or artwork, or Kydex.
- Whether the maker needs the knife itself to fit the sheath.

Give the maker the knife's make and model if it has one, plus detailed photos and measurements of the blade and handle; a tracing of the knife on paper helps too. Ask whether they need the knife itself for the final fitting. Say how snug a fit you want and whether the sheath needs a snap or strap to hold the knife in place.
It depends on the knife and how you use it. A vertical belt sheath hangs straight down, horizontal belt carry runs the knife along the belt, a pocket sheath rides inside a pocket, and a leg strap keeps a long sheath from swinging. A slip sheath protects a knife you mostly display. Tell the maker how and where you'll wear it.
Leather can be tooled, dyed and painted, and it is often oiled to keep it supple. Kydex is a molded plastic that holds the shape of the blade. Some sheaths combine the two, with a Kydex liner inside a leather shell, and a sheepskin lining adds padding. Tell the maker how you'll use the knife, and ask which material they recommend.
