Salvaged Oak & Walnut Dining Table

Salvaged Oak & Walnut Dining Table

$5,500

This round dining room table was created for a client who wanted to use oak lumber that was salvaged from a tree on his property in North Carolina. He wanted to contrast the oak top with a base made from salvaged walnut which was local to the Portland, Oregon area where he had relocated. The design was inspired by an elliptical table by Jack Berberich, who borrowed the idea from the original designer, Alan Peters. The removable oak top is 1 1/4" thick, 66" in diameter and 30" off the floor. The base is constructed of 12/4 walnut with double mortise and tenon joints throughout. The piece is finished with three coats of a clear satin oil/urethane blend. More and more of my clients are requesting salvaged and/or recycled wood in their furniture, and I encourage it whenever I can. Not only is it more environmentally friendly, I also enjoy the challenge of working with material that has the occasional knot, sapwood, irregular grain pattern, or even evidence of previous use that actually just adds character to the piece. And as in the case of this table - wood that has a history can make a far more meaningful addition to a home.
