Reclaimed Douglas Fir And Steel Table

$2,500

This table is made from reclaimed old growth Douglas Fir that was salvaged from a warehouse in downtown Denver. The wood has a lot of character from nails holes and other features it picked up over the years. The nail holes and other imperfections have been filled with epoxy to stabilize the wood and make the table easier to use and clean. The top is over 1.75" thick and finished with several coats of Danish oil and a finishing wax. The base is made from steel channels with a ¼" seam between the metal and the wood. Some of the welds have been ground smooth and others left to add the industrial feel of the table. The base is sealed with a satin lacquer.

Objective:

The goal is to create unique furniture that is rooted in functionality, visually intriguing while displaying honesty of material and a bit of whimsy. To craft pieces that are viewed and used on multiple levels; work that melds with its surroundings while possessing the impact to stand apart. First appearances are of clean, simple objects. A closer look develops into layers of discovery about connections, tectonics, and the character of materials. Each element is continually edited throughout the process to insure every part contributes to the strength of the whole aesthetically, structurally, and conceptually.

Method:

Germinal to each design is an idea of the unique characteristics of materials, used to inspire the formation of the piece. If it is wood, steel, glass, textile or anything, the aim is to take advantage of the strengths and inherent beauty of each material. The act of construction is an ever-changing progression adapting to the challenges and opportunities inherent in manipulating raw materials into a final result.

Philosophy:

It is important to use materials in a sustainable manner. Selection of “green” products is equally important as how they are being used. Each piece of furniture is build with the idea it must stand the test of time to respect the materials from which it was formed.
