The clients wanted an oak twin pedestal desk when they visited my shop, but then they saw a) a cherry dresser in progress, b) the wood collection, and c) my shop desk (in the 2nd photo). One hard right turn and a few hundred hours of work later they had a darned fine desk if I do say so. Two cherry trees contributed to the project; one for the highly figured top and panels, and another for the calm but delicious leg/frame wood. The top and panels are made with thick veneers cut on my big bandsaw, making it tough enough for very hard use (unlike scary-thin modern veneer), but taming wood movement for a very stable design. This approach also permits nice grain sequencing, leading the eye up the panels and across the top. Built with mortise and tenon joinery and careful attention to wood movement, this desk is built to last. The top is hand planed, creating a lively surface akin to some of the finest antiques from the golden period of handmade furniture.
