Barrel Retirement Chest And Shadow Box
Victor is set to retire after serving 20 years in the Navy. He sought me out to make his vision of a retirement chest come to life. A sturdy oak barrel would make a fine chest so I got started on what he described. It was to have a shadow box to display the mementos he cherishes and the flag he swore allegiance to protect. A base reminiscent of what you might see in the belly of a ship as the whisky was making its way across the Atlantic many many years ago. With his name prominently engraved along with his service unit and dates of service on the inside of the lid it is truly something that will last more than a lifetime.

As the designer/architect, however, I found it difficult not to be able to talk with the cabinet maker via telephone. Minor things were missed by using only email, e.g. difficult to approve stain sample via photos, top is narrower than specified etc.
