This modern live edge coffee table is the ultimate in contemporary design and organic beauty. The top consists of a large crosscut (round) slab of Claro Walnut burl. It has an astounding amount of figuring, unusual grain patterns, textured natural edges and colors. The coffee table top resembles a tortoiseshell with it's interwoven hues of browns, blacks and golds. The top has been finished in a high gloss poly to accentuate it's figuring and tones. Like any giant tree slab, this piece contains natural character such as voids, drying checks, etc. The larger drying checks have been filled with a black tinted resin. The custom fabricated bases for this amazing coffee table were done to resemble dual crescent moons. They are made out of a thick gauge sheet metal and powder coated gloss black. From the sides, the base seems to be a perfect circle, yet from front/back view you'll notice there is space left between the two bases to add interest. Kentucky LiveEdge is operated by craftsman Drew Gahafer. He creates quality live edge furniture and unique applications for home and office.
Drew Gahafer is a self-taught woodworker, artist and furniture designer that got his start by upcycling furniture that was either thrown away, neglected, or purchased for mere pennies at yard sales or consignment shops. Plastics, glass, metals and wood were all materials that he was intrigued on refurbishing and building with. In 2008 he built his family home, which was a narrow shotgun style house. After weeks of housing the traditional square coffee table, he realized the dimensions took up 1/3 of the rooms space. In an effort to create something customized for his home space, he traveled back to his roots and brought back 2 narrow live edge slabs from a sawmill in Eastern Kentucky. By the time his first two pieces were near completion, his family and friends made offers on both pieces. He obliged and returned to the mountains for 5 live edge slabs of wood. Once those 5 were near completion, same story. To this day, his home lacks a coffee table.
