Custom Beds

Beds here include platform beds in walnut, maple and tatami styles, floating beds, and headboards cut from live-edge slabs of claro walnut or redwood burl. Traditional designs run from Greene and Greene and Art Nouveau marquetry to cannonball and boat beds, and timber-frame beds in Douglas fir. For children and guests, there are bunk beds (including castle designs and king-over-king), loft beds, daybeds, and theme beds shaped like a pirate ship or an airplane. Some beds hide storage compartments or pull-out drawers.

What sets the price

A listing's price is usually a starting point. Half of the listings here are priced between about $1,600 and $5,500, with a median near $3,100, and one in ten is priced above $9,500. Mattress size, wood, joinery, carving or inlay, a slab headboard and built-in storage set the price of a commission.

Before you start

• Your mattress size and thickness, and whether you'll use a box spring or foundation.
• The headboard height you want, and the room's ceiling height, windows and outlets.
• Storage under the bed, if you want it.
• For a bunk or loft bed, the ceiling height and the ages of the children who will use it.
• The route into the bedroom: doors, halls and stairs.

Describe the bed with the materials, size, budget and date you have in mind, and makers who do this work send proposals.
