Custom Nursery

Commission a handmade crib, cradle, bassinet or other nursery furniture from independent woodworkers across the US. Pieces here include convertible and sleigh cribs, sculpted cradles, changing-table dressers, toy chests and children's rocking chairs. Cribs, cradles and bassinets must meet federal safety standards, so ask the maker how a piece meets them.

About Nursery

Nursery furniture here includes cribs in mahogany and teak, sleigh cribs, and 3-in-1 cribs that convert to a full-size bed; bassinets; cradles, from hand-sculpted walnut to modern designs; co-sleepers; changing-table dressers; toy chests and toy boxes; children's rocking chairs; book and toy storage; and keepsake boxes.

Federal safety standards

Cribs, bassinets, cradles, bedside sleepers and baby changing products sold in the US must meet mandatory standards set by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and dressers fall under its tip-over standard for clothing storage furniture. Before you approve a proposal, ask the maker which standard applies to the piece and how it meets the current version, and read the requirements at cpsc.gov.

What sets the price

A listing's price is usually a starting point. Half of the listings here are priced between about $540 and $2,700, with a median near $935, and one in ten is priced above $4,300. Wood, size, carving and finish set the price of a commission.

Before you start

  • The pieces you need, and the room's measurements.
  • Your due date. On Maker Marketplace, custom furniture and large pieces typically take four to twelve weeks to build, plus shipping.
  • The wood and finish, and photos of the look you want.
  • For a crib, cradle or bassinet, your questions about the CPSC standard, asked before you approve a proposal.

For furniture as your child grows, see Children's Bedroom Furniture; for toys, see Kid's Toys.

Describe the piece with the materials, size, budget and date you have in mind, and makers who do this work send proposals. You pay a 50% deposit on the one you approve, see the finished piece by photos, video call or studio visit, and pay the balance once you approve it; Maker Marketplace holds that payment while it ships.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Full-size and non-full-size cribs sold in the US must meet mandatory CPSC standards (16 CFR parts 1219 and 1220), and bassinets and cradles have their own (16 CFR part 1218). The standards apply to handmade pieces as well. Before you approve a proposal, ask the maker how the piece meets the current standard for its type, and read the requirements at cpsc.gov.

Ask which CPSC standard the piece is built to, how it meets the current version, and for its Children's Product Certificate. Federal law requires the maker of a crib, bassinet or cradle to issue one, based on testing at a CPSC-accepted laboratory. Compare the answers with the requirements at cpsc.gov before you approve a proposal.

Yes. Changing tables and add-on changing units, such as a changing top fixed to a dresser, are covered by the CPSC standard for baby changing products (16 CFR part 1235). Dressers also fall under the federal tip-over standard for clothing storage furniture (16 CFR part 1261). Ask the maker how the piece meets both, and see cpsc.gov for the requirements.

The CPSC's Safe Sleep page, at cpsc.gov/SafeSleep, collects federal guidance on cribs, bassinets and other infant sleep products, along with links to safe sleep guidance from the National Institutes of Health and the CDC. Follow that guidance for how to set up a baby's sleep space; the listings here describe the furniture only.
